SMS vulnerability in smartphones running on MediaTek chipset

Security vulnerabilities are increasing day by day and it is the target of potential hackers now. A new security issue has been found where MediaTek based Android smartphones can be hacked and remotely rebooted by just sending an SMS.

The simple hack enables a person to remotely reboot an Android smartphone by sending the symbol “=” (without quotes) as an SMS. Apparently, this symbol means shutdown and reboot in MediaTek chipset language. I tried this on a Micromax Smartphone (running on the MediaTek processor) and every time an SMS with the = symbol was received; the phone would go into a quick reboot.

This could be a serious issue for smartphone users in India with the following brand,

Micromax
Xolo
Lava
Karbonn
and more..!

There is no official statement from MediaTek regarding this issue.
